Most think that it is selling the company's products or services whilst others think it is building a team. As Network Marketers, we are in business and when you investigate what the real earner is in any business, it is a finished product. Your MLM home business is no exception. So what is your finished product?<br /><br />In a manufacturing plant for example, raw material is manipulated into a finished product. That product has value and is sold at a profit, generating income. Now I know that many of you will be thinking that in your MLM home business, the company that you registered with takes care of the product manufacturing side of things. That's not your responsibility. How much money are you going to be able to earn from selling your company's products? Will that income lead to your financial freedom? Probably not, so the problem here is that the company's products are not the finished product that you should be focusing on.<br /><br />What about building a team? So you start a recruiting campaign and you enrol twenty five or thirty distributors who start using and selling the products. You make some extra money and you think that a team is the finished product. But then you want to earn more money, so you recruit more people, but some of the team members drop out and you find yourself recruiting their replacements. You keep working hard, but your team never gets bigger, because members quit as quickly as you can recruit more. This is known as the revolving door syndrome. The reason why members are quitting is because you don't have a finished product, yet. There is one more stage to go.<br /><br />If you teach your members how to market and promote, then they will be able to achieve their goals through building their own teams. If they are achieving their goals, they are likely to stick around for quite a long time. Most think that it is selling the company's products or services whilst others think it is building a team. As Network Marketers, we are in business and when you investigate what the real earner is in any business, it is a finished product. Your MLM home business is no exception. So what is your finished product?<br /><br />In a manufacturing plant for example, raw material is manipulated into a finished product. That product has value and is sold at a profit, generating income. Now I know that many of you will be thinking that in your MLM home business, the company that you registered with takes care of the product manufacturing side of things. That's not your responsibility. How much money are you going to be able to earn from selling your company's products? Will that income lead to your financial freedom? Probably not, so the problem here is that the company's products are not the finished product that you should be focusing on.<br /><br />What about building a team? So you start a recruiting campaign and you enrol twenty five or thirty distributors who start using and selling the products. You make some extra money and you think that a team is the finished product. But then you want to earn more money, so you recruit more people, but some of the team members drop out and you find yourself recruiting their replacements. You keep working hard, but your team never gets bigger, because members quit as quickly as you can recruit more. This is known as the revolving door syndrome. The reason why members are quitting is because you don't have a finished product, yet. There is one more stage to go.<br /><br />If you teach your members how to market and promote, then they will be able to achieve their goals through building their own teams. If they are achieving their goals, they are likely to stick around for quite a long time. Trouble is, it is almost impossible to start an Internet business without spending some money. There’s web hosting for a start. However, here’s a rough guide on how to build an Internet business starting with nothing.<br /><br />If you have no money to start off your online business, you can earn some capital using your already existing skills or knowledge. You can give tuition to students on your best subject in school or college, you can teach others about your hobby, you can write guides on knowledge or skills you picked up through experience that can’t be found in books.<br /><br />The first thing to do is make a list of your skills. What skills do you have? (What do you mean - none? Of course you have!) If, for example, you’ve been running a home for the past few years, you have skills in organizing, (trips, parties, healthy lunchboxes etc.) childcare, budgeting to name just a few. You might also (perhaps through your job or from your hobbies) have an interest in languages? It is vital to list skills or knowledge that you have and that could possibly be in demand by other people.<br /><br />For example, let’s say you love fly-fishing and you do it every day after work. You could build your Internet business on writing a guide to fly-fishing. There you are, that won’t cost you a cent! Maybe you’re good at writing stories or were good at essays at school. Copywriting is a very useful tool, and good copywriters are always in demand. There is always some mundane job that people don't want to do, but maybe you can do it. One person’s mundane is another’s exciting!<br /><br />Another way to go is through affiliate marketing. Many internet marketers start out this way, and many of the really successful ones keep doing it. It can pay really big dividends – if you know where and how to advertise. It works on the principle that when you get someone to sign up under you, you get paid a certain amount if that person buys the product being sold. If it’s a paid membership site, you get paid a percentage of those members’ monthly fees for as long as they remain a member. Yet, how do we define this hybrid phrase with the word work meaning more than a specific outcome and the word ethics being more than the values that enhance that outcome? </p><p style="text-align: justify;">When we say we are going to work, work becomes the place of employment. When we say we are working, the implication is that we are engaged in a work-related activity and should be performing one or more specific tasks. However, the word work in today’s global economy does not easily denote specific outcomes much less measurable ones. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Years ago when our economy was agrarian based, farmers said they were going to work the fields. Their work or more specifically the outcomes of their work could be viewed from the plowed fields to the stacked bales of hay. In today’s technology and service driven economy, workers outcomes are not as nearly recognizable, but what is noticed is their behavior. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Now, ethics is a difficult word to define, as it is more than the enhancement of outcomes. This is aptly demonstrated by the variety of expectations such as being to work or school on time, performing quality work, being self-directed, having self-initiative, or being positive to both fellow contributors and customers. Ethics, from these expectations, encompass the internal behaviors of the contributors or what I really believe are attitudes. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Let’s step out of the box and construct a new and more accurate term that meets the expectations of both the business and educational worlds. First, let’s ask ourselves are we more concerned with the behavior or the attitudes? If we recognize that it is the attitudes that drive the behaviors that generate the outcomes, it would suggest that the contributors’ attitudes have the greater impact on the outcomes. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Next, since behavior has numerous meanings, possibly we can substitute performance for behavior. Performance can be measured provided the organization has accurate and complete expectations, valid assessments that do not penalize the contributors along with a well-communicated strategic plan. Through clearly articulated goals with consistent leadership and management, contributors have the opportunity to improve their performance thereby achieving measurable results. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Attitudes of performance appear then to better describe the desired outcomes and expectations that we have as employers, educators or even parents. Good personality? Effective communicator? Dynamic? Knowledgeable? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions then you are right. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Now, sit back and take a look at yourself and ask yourself if you meet these criteria. Are you a dynamic, energetic effective communicator with a good personality? Are you knowledgeable in the areas affected by the position? If you cannot answer these questions positively, then you need to make some changes. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Why Change </p><p style="text-align: justify;">The main reason you want to change is so that when you go for an interview, you are not sitting there like a bump on a log waiting for the next question. Instead, you should be asking questions, showing your knowledge and skills and involving the interviewer in stimulating conversation. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">How do you change? </p><p style="text-align: justify;">There are many ways you can go about changing but lots of us do not have thousands of dollars to put out for classes. The easiest and often times most productive way to start making changes is to use your friends as guinea pigs to determine if you meet the criteria. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Communicate </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Start by working with one or two friends on your communication skills. If you are shy and introverted, you need to practice with your friends by being assertive and overcoming your shy nature. You can practice daily until you feel more comfortable around people. Local employment security commissions have free programs to help you with improving your communication skills. You can even go to the public library and read on effective communication. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Be Dynamic and Energetic </p><p style="text-align: justify;">If you are the kind of person who just kind of hangs out and lets things go by, you will need to work on your energy level. Companies today are looking for employees who can do more than one job and have the energy level to contribute on any level and at any time. If you are a couch potato who only gets up if the house is on fire then you need to start working on your energy level. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Start taking Vitamin B12, CoQ10 or whatever herbal supplement will boost your energy level. Drink extra coffee every morning or jog 5 miles every day. Do whatever it takes to increase your energy level to the point where a prospective employer will be excited by your energy and want to give you a job. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Be Knowledgeable </p><p style="text-align: justify;">The final step in creating a dynamic personality to make an interview the show-stopping, interactive experience it needs to be is to be knowledgeable. When you are called for an interview for a position, make sure you know something about all of the duties described in the job req. It may knock the interviewer for a loop, and might appear to be overly aggressive, but some people think of it as "closing the sale." And for some people it has worked. For others this approach may not be comfortable, or have a negative same effect.<br /><br />Whether you are aggressive, passive and polite, or somewhere in between, will depend on your personality, the interview situation, and the job for which you are applying.<br /><br />Closing Points<br /><br />Regardless of your style or how you choose to close the interview, there are some key points to keep in mind.<br /><br />1. Leave your interviewer with the right picture of you. (Think of at least five skills or traits you want remembered after the interview.) Choose something "concrete." When you answer with, "I have great communication skills and I am a hard worker," you will not stand out.<br /><br />Example: "I have two skills that are distinctly different but that define my personality. I am a very good pianist and an excellent 'computer guy.' I'm known for my love of keyboards."<br /><br />2. Ask if there is anything else you can provide. (References, background information, or samples?)<br /><br />Example: "Is there any other information that I can provide that would convince you that I am the right person for this job?"<br /><br />3. State your interest in the position. (Sound interested and tell what added value you can bring to the job.)<br /><br />Example: "From what you have been telling me about this position, and from what I know about your company, I know that I have the right mix of experience and education to bring value to this position. Based on past experiences I can "ramp up" quickly and be on board with projects within the first few weeks."<br /><br />4. Ask about the next step in the process. (Important for you to know for follow up. Ask for the decision date, if possible.)<br /><br />Example: "I'm interested in knowing what the next step in the process is and when you will be making a decision in order to follow up."<br /><br />5. Find out how to contact them. (If you don't hear back, you will need to know who to contact and whether they will accept calls to check the status.)<br /><br />Example: "I'd like to stay in touch and follow up with you in a week or two to see how the process is going and where I stand. How do you prefer that I communicate with you – email or phone?"<br /><br />Closing the sale is important, but your closing should be tailored to the position; your personality and interviewing style, and the interviewer. This study will be a second site for a larger study being conducted through the Lee Moffitt Cancer and Research Institute in Tampa Florida. </div><div><br />Specific Aims </div><ol><li><div align="justify">To identify patterns of use of complementary/alternative therapies in a sample of persons who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.</div></li><li><div align="justify">To identify costs related to use of complementary/alternative therapies.</div></li><li><div align="justify">To identify factors associated with use of complementary/alternative therapies.</div></li><li><div align="justify">To identify complementary/alternative therapies that women diagnosed with breast cancer find to be helpful. </div></li></ol><p>Relevance Statement</p><p align="justify">Practitioners of conventional medicine have justifiably criticized most complementary/alternative medical (CAM) therapies for the relative lack of peer reviewed scientifically conducted analysis. Nevertheless, use of these therapies has increased so dramatically in the US and Europe, that it is unwise for medical science to continue to ignore this potentially harmful situation (Cassileth & Chapman, 1996a; Downer, et al., 1994). Documented use of complementary/alternative therapies in both oncology and non-oncology patients is estimated to be as high as 45% (Cassileth & Chapman, 1996a; Downer, et al., 1994; Eisenberg, et al., 1993; Munstedt, Kirsch, Milch, Sachsse & Vahrson, 1996).</p><p align="justify">Although several studies on use of complementary therapies in cancer patients have been carried out in North America and Northern European countries, there is a shortage of reliable information about the types of therapies being used, the cost of these therapies, how patients are referred to these therapies, and the reasons for choosing to use complementary therapies. Pervious studies indicate that users tend to be younger, of higher social class and are more likely to be women (Bennett &amp;amp; Lengacher, 1999; Downer, et al., 1994). Therefore, an in-depth study of the patterns of use of complementary therapies in a selected group of women with breast cancer could answer many of these questions.</p><p align="justify">First this study has relevance to the treatment of breast cancer because it is critical to identify current patterns of use of CAM, to provide information needed to help patients avoid possible harmful side effects and medication interactions. Once patterns of use are identified, the scientific community can examine specific CAM therapies for efficacy, which could impact survival and quality of life.</p><p align="justify">Second this study has relevance in that although increases in use of individual CAM have been cited in the literature, patterns of use in breast cancer patients has not been adequately documented. Criticisms are related to lack of or improper evaluation of CAM, the practice of some CAM providers discouraging or preventing patients from seeking appropriate medical treatment, potentially harmful side effects from some CAM, and some providers preying on desperate patients.</p><p align="justify">Third, this study has relevance in that it will show the impact of increasing out of pocket expenses for CAM treatments and insurance coverage costs. Some of the CAM is relatively cost effective, i.e, relaxation guided imagery tapes, and others may be quite costly.</p><p align="justify">Fourth, this study has relevance in that it will help identify reasons women with breast cancer seek out complementary and alternative therapies, and their relative satisfaction with the specific CAM therapies they have tried. Information from this study will assist traditional medicine to learn more about effective CAM and to offer more integrative services. Results of this study will provide data for further testing of specific therapies, which will give new empirical evidence on the safety and efficacy of these therapies.</p><p align="justify">Documenting the use, reasons for use, patient reports of benefits gained, and costs of CAM in a group of women with breast cancer can serve as a guide for future studies. Documenting commonly used therapies that are not found to be helpful for women with breast cancer will guide us in patient teaching and help us ask appropriate questions during the admission examination. On the other hand, cost-effective and non-harmful CAM therapies may well prove to have a role in the medical treatment plan by relieving psychological and physical symptoms of cancer, controlling side effects from conventional therapy, and helping patients gain a sense of control while living with breast cancer.</p><p align="center">Review of Literature</p><p align="left">Background</p><p align="justify">Alternative/complementary therapies have recently become a multimillion business in the US and several European nations, with many patients paying more in out-of-pocket costs for these treatments than they do for standard medical care. The use of these therapies generate questions related to inadequate evaluation of the costs, risks, and benefits of specific therapies, along with problems related to possible suppression of effective conventional therapies and motivation for profits received from desperate persons seeking self-healing (Brigden, 1995; Guzley, 1992; Fletcher, 1992). Given the ever increasing numbers of herbs, supplements and non-conventional substances that are on the market, knowing which ones our patients are likely to be using and the probable side effects associated with these “popular” supplements will greatly assist health care providers to provide appropriate patient education on this topic, as well as altering us to watch for known side effects and medication interactions (Montbriand, 1999; Zaloznik, 1994).</p><p>Trends in Use of Alternative Medicine</p><p align="justify">Use of alternative therapies has increased in the general population from 33.8% in 1990 to 42.1% in 1997 (Eisenberg, et al., 1998). Complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) has been reported to be used by 25%-50% of the general population as identified in industrialized nations (Cassileth & Chapman, 1996a; Eisenberg, et al., 1993; Lerner & Kennedy, 1992). The reasons for increasing use are very complex, but increased consumer demand for more choice and control, and an increased growth in availability and variety of types of therapies are identified to be factors. In addition, increased use could be reflected in an increasing number of insurers and managed care organizations which offer programs and benefits (Blais, Maiga &amp;amp;amp; Aboubacar, 1997; Eisenberg, et al., 1998). Use can be related to social and cultural reasons, however lack of hope for a medical cure is frequently a primary motivation (Downer, et al., 1994). In two studies of “unconventional medicine” in the United States, most persons reported using non-conventional treatment for non-life threatening chronic conditions, for which there may be no effective medical treatment (Cassileth & Chapman, 1996a; Eisenberg, et al., 1993). The cost of this use of CAM is significant. From the first study completed in 1993 to the second in 1997, there was a 45.2% increase in estimated expenditures for alternative medicine professional services, with an estimate of $12.2 billion paid out of pocket, which was estimated to exceed 1997 out-of pocket expenditures for all hospitalizations. However, many of the studies cited above were not aimed at, nor limited to, persons with cancer (Eisenberg, et al., 1998).</p><p>Trends in Use with Oncology Patients</p><p align="justify">A variety of methods have been used in the past in an attempt to determine complementary/alternative therapy use among persons with cancer. Early studies, while providing some information on the use of alternative therapy, frequently were biased by focusing on what the researchers termed “unorthodox, unconventional or questionable” cancer cures, and did not adequately document participants’ use of complementary therapies to improve well-being and quality of life. Many of these early studies considered a therapy “orthodox” if it was used to improve mental well-being, decrease pain, or improve quality of life, but treated the same therapy as “unorthodox” if the intent was also to improve the physical well-being of the person with cancer (Cassileth, Lusk, Strouse & Bodenheimer, 1984). In a study using a self-developed interview to determine the use of “unorthodox” cancer therapies among US persons with cancer 43% of the participants used conventional therapy alone, 8% used unorthodox therapy alone, and 49% used a combination of conventional therapy and unorthodox treatment. The most popular unorthodox treatments were metabolic therapy 42%, diet therapy 35%, megavitamin therapy 24%, imagery 24%, spiritual/faith healing 19%, and immune therapy (injecting various substances to boost immune function) 15%. Most persons were using more than one type of unorthodox therapy, combined with conventional medical treatment (Cassileth, et al., 1984). The early studies in this area reported that use of alternative therapies among cancer patients range from 9%-50%. However there is indication that these estimates may be low, because patients are reluctant to report use of unconventional therapies. Unconventional alternative therapy methods appeal to patients with advanced stage cancer primarily to improve their quality and length of life (Caudell, 1996; Mahon, Cella & Donovan, 1990). There is also evidence to suggest that oncologists may have less negative attitudes towards use of complementary therapies today, than previously (Andritzky, 1995).</p><p align="justify">In a review of 21 studies, the range of use in cancer patients was from 7% to 64%. Major problems identified were inconsistent definitions of CAM, with some studies counting conventional psychological methods such as group therapy as CAM, and few studies differentiated between therapies used in an adjunctive mode and those applied towards cure, exclusive of mainstream treatment. Future research needs to center itself on clarifying distinctions between potential harmful alternative cures and potentially beneficial therapies that can be used to as adjuncts to cancer treatment, thus relieving symptoms of cancer or control treatment side effects. In addition, more standardization of questions is needed, to generate more comparable data. In an attempt to increase standardization, items on the instrument used in this study (CTRS II) were taken from the list of complementary/alternative treatments published by Office of Alternative Medicine, National Institute of Health (Bennett &amp;amp; Lengacher, 1998; Bennett & Lengacher, 1999).</p><p>Use of CAM in Breast Cancer</p><p align="justify">An early study of unorthodox treatments in cancer medicine identified that 32% of the breast cancer patients surveyed used conventional along with unorthodox therapies. Persons with breast cancer were the highest users of combined CAM and orthodox treatments in the malignant diseases assessed. Breast cancer was second compared to genitourinary in using unorthodox treatment alone: 23% compared to 30%. In this study, the largest percentage of users of both conventional and unorthodox treatments was women, 68% compared to men (32%) (Cassileth, et al., 1984).</p><p align="justify">One of the most recent studies was completed in Europe, in which use was examined while attending conventional treatment (Crocerri, et al., 1998). Results from 242 responders showed that 16% were using complementary therapies (CT) one year after diagnosis, compared to 8.7% before diagnosis with breast cancer. The main reason for using CT was physical distress. The most common CAM was homeopathy, manual healing, herbalism and acupuncture. However, rates of use of specific CAM therapies, their usefulness and their cost in the treatment of women with breast cancer has not been well documented.</p><p>Theoretical Framework</p><p align="justify">The theory of reasoned action (Ajzen, 1980) provides a conceptual framework within which to consider the use of complementary therapies by persons with cancer. The theory of reasoned action examines the relationships among subject attitudes, subjective norms, intentions and behaviors. According to the theory, behavior is the result of a specific behavioral intention. In this study, a participant's positive response toward a specific complementary therapy will be regarded as a behavioral intention. A behavioral intention is determined by the attitude toward the behavior and the subjective norm regarding that behavior. A participant's intention to use a complementary therapy is a function of attitude, which can be positive or negative. Attitudes reflect the participant's beliefs about the consequences of participating in the behavior, and evaluations of these consequences. For example, if a participant believes that a specific complementary therapy will help in coping with the disease, the attitude towards that therapy is positive. In addition to attitudes, subjective norms also play a part in the decision making process. Subjective norms are perceptions of what important others are perceived to think about a certain subject. For example, if a participant believes that significant others approve of the choice to participate in a particular complementary therapy, there will be a stronger intention to participate in the therapy. Both attitudes and subjective norms play a part in the development of a behavioral intention. In this study, the Complementary Therapy Rating Scale II (CTRSII) will be used to measure the behavioral intentions of rural persons with cancer towards the use of various complementary therapies. </p><p>Methods</p><p align="justify">This study will use a descriptive, cross-sectional survey design to determine patterns of use of complementary therapies among women with breast cancer. The CTRS II will be distributed to women with breast cancer using a variety of methods, including face to face interview format, phone interview format, and mail surveys for those whom it is not possible to reach using the first two formats. Research assistants for data collection will be recruited from Indiana State University nursing students, as well as oncology staff nurses serving in various hospitals and clinics. The primary researcher will oversee the research process, data coding, data base development, conduct data analysis, and be responsible for the final version of the study report. This will be facilitated by Indiana State University releasing the PI for 10% time as in-kind support. The part-time graduate assistant hired with grant funding will coordinate and facilitate institutional review for the various institutions, data collection, data coding and data entry into the SPSS database.</p><p>Sample Description and Inclusion</p><p align="justify">Criteria A sample of 100 women diagnosed with breast cancer will be recruited from the Inclusion criteria include a clinical diagnosis of breast cancer, all stages of breast cancer and all ages will be included. Participants must have been diagnosed for at least 6 months for inclusion into this study. Participants must be able to speak and understand English well enough to answer the survey questions. Survey data obtained will be linked to the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Data Base.</p><p>Procedures for Subject Recruitment, Timeline, and Informed Consent</p><p align="justify">In the first 3 months of this study, local physicians, nursing staff on oncology units and oncologists will be contacted and asked to assist in this study by allowing our research team to either distribute surveys through their offices, or by posting information concerning our study where appropriate subjects can learn of the study and call for more information. Community support groups for persons with cancer will also be contacted, and asked to assist the researchers in locating appropriate subjects for this study. Snowball subject recruitment methods will also be utilized, where subjects with breast cancer will be asked to pass along study contact information to other persons with breast cancer whom they believe would like to participate. Research subjects will receive a gift basket of self-care items in appreciation of their time and effort spent on this project. Community data collectors not employed by ISU (staff nurses and/or nursing students), will be paid $10 per complete survey form collected, to compensate them for the time involved in subject recruitment and interviewing. Data collection is estimated to take a total of 9 months. Data analysis and the study report will be written in the final 3 months of this 1 year project. A project update will be mailed to the funding agency 6 months into the study. Informed consent will be obtained from all participants, Data will be treated as confidential and only reporting of group data will occur. Each person’s name will be kept confidential, and surveys will be coded to allow survey results to be linked to the Comprehensive Breast Program’s Data Base.</p><p>Instrument/Study Measures</p><p align="justify">The survey instrument to be used in this study is an enhanced version of the Complementary Therapy Rating Scale, which was used in the earlier investigations (Bennett &amp;amp; Lengacher, 1998; Bennett & Lengacher, 1999). See appendix B for copies of articles. Using standardized classifications of complementary therapies from the Office of Alternative Medicine, several new categories have been added to this instrument. Reliability data for the previously published version of the Complementary Therapy Rating Scale was .86 using odd-even split half reliability and .77 using coefficient alpha. The scale has been revised in an effort to obtain more complete data for this study. Additional questions concerning reasons for using CAM, cost of use, and if the patient had informed their physician about their use of CAM have been included. In addition, questions related to patient recommendations for CAM use, how helpful specific CAM therapies are, who provides the CAM treatment and satisfaction with both conventional and CAM therapies have been added.</p><p>Preliminary data and plan for dissemination of results of this study</p><p align="justify">The earlier version of the CTRS was developed and tested in a sample of rural Midwestern cancer patients. The CTRS has subsequently been published (Bennett &amp; Lengacher, 1998), as have the preliminary results obtained with it (Bennett & Lengacher, 1999). However, the original CTRS did not elicit data on use of specific herbal treatments or other alternative therapy options. These treatments tend to be some of the most dangerous and further information is needed on the use of these items. In addition, this study will elicit patient evaluation of specific therapy usefulness, cost of therapy, physician disclosure, and reasons for use of these therapies. The revised instrument adapted for this study will allow for collection of this important data. Results of this study will be disseminated as were the results of our earlier studies: on the internet via the primary researcher’s webpage, through research and community presentations, and will be submitted for publication in an appropriate research journal. No single approach is guaranteed for any one job seeker but, it will be a full time job. You will need a full time office. Don't procrastinate. The ball is in your court. You are selling yourself. Think positive and get organised. </div><div><br />4 - Don't forget your options! </div><div><br />It may take a while to find the opportunity you want. Consider a part time job/self employment, working on a trial basis, or a temporary agency while you continue your job search. Give thought to broaden the scope of your employment search. You can apply for different titles than you have been. You can commute further than you originally wanted to. Thinking through specific situations will allow you to choose scenarios most appropriate to the question. </p><p>Have questions for the interviewer. As you arrive early for the interview (at least 15 minutes), and you are waiting to be called in, mentally prepare for your interview. Picture the interview going smoothly, the interviewer asking questions, and your answering them perfectly. Imagine the interviewer telling you that you seem perfect for the job as you leave even more excited about the position. These are some of the things that should be going through your mind. If you are nervous, start your mental preparation by taking deep breaths and thinking "You are" as you inhale and "relaxed" as you exhale. Repeat this procedure until you are relaxed. Avoid thinking, "What if they don't like me?" or "What if I get stumped?" and focus instead on relaxing. Just try it –- mental visualization worked for the Bulls and Phil Jackson, and it will work for you.</p><p><em>Close of the interview.</em> You are ahead of the competition and on your way to the gold medal, but you get a cramp. Do you stop? Not a chance. You have to cross the finish line, just as you have to close the sale of yourself in the interview. The end of the interview is your time to close with "a positive, very interested in what you have learned" close. When the Interviewer is closing with "Well, if you have no further questions, then we are done," that is your cue to say one of the following:</p><ul><li>Actually, I'd like to know how I should proceed from here. Should I contact you or will you be in contact?</li><li>How soon will I hear from you? </li><li>What is the process from here?</li><li>What would distinguish one potential candidate joining your company from another?</li><li>How do I prove my commitment to the organization?</li></ul><p><em>Follow-up.</em> You leave the interview and feel good about the position. Now go to your car and write down what just happened. Write the topics discussed, the characteristics the interviewer described for the position, and other details. This will help you write a thank you letter that shows both your interest and that you are a perfect match for the position.</p><p>There are, of course, as many ways to succeed in an interview as there are Olympic gold medal winners. The best advice is to relax and be yourself. Remember that your interviewer once interviewed for his/her job and understands the intensity of the interview process. By being as prepared as possible for your interview, you will enhance the qualities that have already made you a great candidate. I'm still getting my head around it, but it does certainly go to show how many great ideas, relatively simple in concept, are still waiting to be actualised on the web - and the fact there are many more millionaires yet to be made.<br /><br />We can all find inspiration in that!<br /><br />I'm an admirer of YouTube; as much as for their success (perhaps more) as for their service. It doesn't really matter what happens to YouTube from this point onwards, it was the getting to this point which is truly amazing and a story which will be referred to by many in the industry for years to come.<br /><br />I only started using YouTube a few months ago - to watch <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg" target="_blank">The Evolution of Dance</a> which had received a great deal of press around March this year. At the time of writing this, the clip has been viewed nearly 40 million times.<br /><br />I sniffed around a little more after viewing the clip and was immediately blown away that just about *any* music video from my misspent youth was available. I tried obscure one-hit wonders from the 80's.. they were all there. Ah, the nostalgia.<br /><br />The other point that impressed me was that the service just worked - so easy to use, excellent streaming. Rumor has it that the company currently pays between 1 - 2 million dollars a month in bandwidth bills.<br /><br />THE SHORT EVOLUTION OF YOUTUBE<br /><br />YouTube was launched early in 2005 in the same way that most great tech related companies seem to be - a garage and no real cash to speak of (Google, Microsoft and eBay have "garage" type roots). The founders were Chad Hurley (29), Steve Chen (28) and Jawed Karim - all of whom met via their employment at PayPal.<br /><br />The story is that one night they became frustrated with trying to email a video clip. They then fleshed out the infrastructure for their video sharing platform within a couple of hours. It's a classic scenario of identifying a problem from the perspective of a consumer and then addressing a need.The domain name was registered on the 14th of February 2005 and the site was open to the public by May. It was an instant hit; and word of mouth took over which fuelled the initial growth.<br /><br />Towards the end of 2005, YouTube was "officially" launched after securing funding from Sequoia Capital to the tune of 3.5 million dollars. Sequoia Capital sunk in another 8 million clams in April 2006. The thought of outside investors can be rather scary, but for some businesses, growing too fast can be equally as deadly as growing too slow. If YouTube hadn't chased the investor cash, their servers would have bogged down, new features couldn't have been added and users would have quickly gravitated to some of the other services that were rapidly springing up.<br /><br />As for revenue during this early period - there was none to speak of. This was starting to look rather like a dotcom bubble biz from the late 90's/early 2000.The very interesting thing here is that even with all the investment cash, very little was put into promoting YouTube; all the money went into infrastructure and responding to user requests for features. That's one major difference to many of the dotcom bubble companies who spent up big on ads. YouTube played it very smart by making it easy for their users to do the promotion for them. It was viral marketing at its best; from simple ideas such has having short links to videos (easy to email) and tell-a-friend functions, to allowing videos to easily be embedded in profiles of other social networking services; with YouTube branding of course. Their voting system also helped to create a sense of community as did profile pages for users.<br /><br />The ensuing buzz and videos such as The Evolution of Dance then caught the attention of the press and spurred on even more activity.<br /><br />YOUTUBE AND COPYRIGHT<br /><br />It wasn't always a bed of roses during their growth; the issue of copyright has dogged the company on many occasions and probably will do so for some time to come. While I'm sure that the user created original videos has played a substantial role in their success, I do believe that perhaps it was the copyrighted content being so easily accessible that may have been the *major* factor of their rocket ride. In my case, the Evolution of Dance got me there, but it was the 80's music videos that kept me hanging around, reinforcing my awareness and recall of the word "YouTube".In terms of copyrighted content; how have they survived? Well, they've been very clever in utilizing the very grey area of the <a href="http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/usc_sec_17_00000512----000-.html" target="_blank">DMCA Safe Harbor Provisions</a>; which provides protection to service providers from liability for the activities of its users. As they were seen in the eyes of the law to fall into that category; they've been somewhat protected .. up until now anyway; there's still a few law suits kicking around.But even on that point, they've been very smart. Instead of trying to be crusaders and digging their heels in; which has been the undoing of other services, they have extended an olive branch to some copyright owners in the form of revenue share partnerships which has seen some content effectively becoming licensed.The way that works with music videos is YouTube has software in place which can identify soundtracks in videos posted posted by its users; the copyright owner then gets a slice of any advertising revenue run alongside the video.These partnerships also helped pave the way for what was about to happen next.<br /><br />YOUTUBE STRIKES BIG<br /><br />The payoff for the YouTube founders ideas and clever maneuvering occurred on October 9 when Google, Inc., acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion in Google's stock. With Google now in the arena, any lawsuits are most likely to become background noise.From $0 to $1.65 billion in under two years - my hat is well and truly off to these guys just for that achievement. They played the game well. A word of warning though; starting up a site that has a sizeable chunk of copyrighted content without the copyright owner's permission is certainly not for the faint-hearted and does raise some rather tricky ethical dilemmas in my opinion. Here are some reasons why China is a hot-spot employment destination:<br /><br />1. China is the fastest growing economy with the highest demand for labour.<br />2. China's standard of living (living cost) is relatively cheap compared to other countries.<br />3. Salaries for foreign workers are given preferential treatment. (Foreigners receive higher salary than the local residents)<br />4. Wide area of employment opportunities. (Business, Information and Technology, Education, Media, Entertainment etc.)<br />5. Laws and regulations concerning work permits and visas are much less complicated. Obtaining a working visa is easier compared to other countries.<br /><br />BASICS<br /><br />You need to know first and foremost that the Chinese people are very nationalistic. According to Times Magazine there are three hyper-nationalist countries in Asia namely; China, Japan and South Korea. What is the relevance of them being extra-nationalist? The fact that they are very nationalist would mean that a slight negative remark on their culture, tradition, politics etc. would offend them. Hence, if you want to work in China, you should know how to kowtow. It's not an easy job but try to look at the good sides of China and appreciate it around Chinese people, especially when your employer is around (It's a good way of making friends too). Believe me, you'll get there sentiment... with it comes support, respect and assurance. Though not all Chinese employers are hyper-nationalist, it would still be safe to assume that all of them wants to hear good things about their country.<br /><br />As we all know, China is a communist country; therefore, religion, political freedom, and the usual rights you get from a democratic country cannot be availed of. You have to live a life restraint from what you are used to. Moreover, the word "One" has been greatly used in most of their policies, which you are expected to respect. One-China Policy (that Taiwan is part of China), One Child Policy (couples are allowed to only one child), One Political Party (Communist Party is the only legitimate party) and One Dog per household policy (Especially in Urban areas). No wonder the theme for the Beijing 2008 Olympics is "One World, One Dream".<br /><br />JOB APPLICATION<br /><br />If you find working in China to be of your interest, the next thing you should do is to apply for a job. The most convenient way to obtain a working position in China is to apply via the Internet. Albeit you can always go to the nearest Chinese embassy to look for available positions in China, still, the Internet is the best place to find one. Here are a few pointers in order to avoid these unpleasant experiences. When you apply on-line, make sure that the advertisement clearly provides a detail about the company (address, telephone number, website etc.), the job (your duties and responsibilities, time required of you to work, job qualification and requirement etc.) and the compensation (monthly salary, date of receiving salary, life insurance, health insurance, accommodation, paid holidays etc.). You are then encouraged to apply only after a thorough investigation of the advertisement's integrity.<br /><br />Upon receipt of notice of employment after the application process, you should request for a copy of the standard contract. You will use this document to obtain a working visa. In order to legally work in China, you need a Z visa. You can obtain a Z visa from the nearest Chinese Embassy in your country through the help of your employer in China. Hence, if the company recruiting you for a job in China cannot provide the legal documents for your working visa, the company is not legitimate. If however, they require you to enter China through an L visa (tourist visa), the more that you should doubt the company's integrity for it is illegal to enter China with an L visa with the purpose of getting employed. Even if your employer promises you to convert your L visa to working visa once you arrive in China. Westerners visiting China have the leverage of being treated with special consideration. This is particularly true if you are Caucasian. Unfortunately, Asian and Black foreigners might not experience the same treatment that Chinese people render the white foreigners. I have met several Filipinos, Singaporeans, Thais and Indonesians who have been discriminated by virtue of the colour of their skin. To Chinese employers, a person with Caucasian features is superior to a typical Asian like themselves or Blacks for that matter. Again, this is not a generalisation of the Chinese people. My employer for instance offered me a job based on my skills and abilities. It's a widely known fact that professional qualifications and work experiences are but secondary requirements for all foreign workers. The sad reality is that most Chinese employers judge an employee through his/her physical attributes. In short, the better-looking you are, the higher the chances that you get employed. The setback of this employment scheme is an inferior labour force and low-quality management performance.<br /><br />ONLY IN CHINA<br /><br />Only in China can you find one of the world's oldest civilisations. Only in China can you see the Great Wall, Sanxingdue, Juizhaiguo, Potala Palace, Forbidden City, the historical Tiananmen Square and a lot more. While you work in China, you will have the opportunity to travel. China has several holidays you can enjoy. Some of my colleagues from America have been travelling around China for 9 months and yet, they haven't seen most of China. United States of America was just then a flourishing economy, which to date is the world's most powerful country. At present, if you try to review statistical data regarding economic status, military ranking etc., United Kingdom is lagging behind Japan and Germany, countries that were both torn by the Second World War but have managed to out beat UK in as short as four decades.<br /><br />What happened to United Kingdom's performance? This has been the topic of my research and today, I wish to summarise my findings and let other people know through my blog.</span><br /><div><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#000099;">United Kingdom, for the record, has established the largest empire throughout the course of history. Not even Kublai Khan or Alexander the great can match the territory that UK has once conquered. United Kingdom's colonial and imperial power can be felt to at least one country in every known continent. Due to the vast territory that UK has conquered, UK managed to exploit these countries' resources for their own benefit. India for example has been the source of gems and minerals for United Kingdom. Aside from enslaving African people and treating them like commodities (Slaves were commonly traded in UK before), African people suffered tremendously from UK's harsh economic, social (Apartheid system) and political policies towards their colonies. China wasn't excused from the abusive power of UK at that time. The British government started trading with Chinese people, particularly in southern China (Guangdong Province), before the Great War (WWI) commenced. After several incidences of corruption by the British officials, the Chinese Empire thought that trade relations between UK and China is bound to favour UK alone, so as a reaction, China announced its withdrawal from the trade agreement. In response, UK waged a belligerent move known as the Opium war aimed at threatening China if the trading relationship is not restored. Apparently, the British government is earning so much money from selling opium to the Chinese people and the end of the trade agreement will definitely result to tremendous losses on their part. To put an end to the Opium war, Hong Kong was handed down to UK for a period of time to serve as a colony. This move was intended to secure China from not being further invaded by UK. UK stopped the the war but its illicit opium trade continued using Hong Kong as the gateway to mainland market.</span></div><div><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#000099;">Indeed, UK was then invincible. UK was the superpower in all aspects of society. UK was at the pedestal. However, there were mistakes that UK wasn't able to manage well. From the Great War to the Second World War, UK invested so much of their resources to secure peace and order within the region… within the world. Out of their efforts and sacrifices to secure world peace and order resulted to compromising their own economy. UK's budget was dominated by funding allocated to finance the on-going-war. The worsening economic condition of UK was further aggravated by the surfacing of a great number of people from their colonies demanding for their independence. This will undeniably translate to UK's economic paralysis. UK was left with its own land to cultivate and to extract resources from, which apparently is barren. In short, UK is a country with dearth resources and only became wealthy out of the resources they extracted from their colonies. After granting independence to most of its colonies, where will UK get its resources to continue its businesses and to finance its operations? The answer is obvious, UK was compelled to let go of its major industries. What’s worse? UK went bankrupt and even requested for financial aid just after WWII to initiate reconstruction of its war affected country. Furthermore, UK is confronted with a huge debt from the United States of America for the Marshall Plan, a reconstructing project instituted by USA (Gen. George Marshall) aimed at rebuilding war torn Europe right after the Second World War. With a balance of payment containing enormous trade deficit, it was expected that UK’s economy is about to turn sluggish/lethargic... until eventually, UK gave way for USA, Japan and Germany.</span></div><div><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#000099;">Recently, United Kingdom is ranked 21st in the world in terms of population with 60.27 million people residing there in mid 2006. According to data obtained from UNDP HD Indicators, national growth rate in UK during the 1975-2002 was 0.3%. This was much lower than the high-income countries' growth of 0.6 %. </span></div><div><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#000099;">A member of OECD, UK has the fourth largest economy in the world, with Gross National income of $ 1680.6 billions (2003). In terms of purchasing power parity, Per capita GNI in 2003 was US $ 27,460. Average annual growth rate of GDP was 2.2 % during 2003. If we look at the expenditure method for calculating national income in UK, we find that almost 70% of GDP in the UK is accounted for by private consumption. Among the other indicators of economy, the level of inflation as measured by Consumer price index was 1.6% in Dec 2005. All of which mentioned proving UK's continuing deterioration. </span></div><div><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#000099;">Out of my research, I came up with a hypothesis which is most likely to occur. That is the gradual economic weakening of USA and the emergence of China as the next superpower. With the current developments that our economy has attained in such a little time, from its downfall beginning from the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis to the economic disintegration brought about by political unrest, Filipinos ought to be happy about it. It only means, Philippines is capable of constructive changes. Still however, despite all that has already been achieved, a myriad of things must be accomplished. The question therefore is what need be achieved to further improve the economic conditions of the Philippines?<br /><br />1. Political Stability - Although it is inherent in every democracy that a disgruntled society can resort to protests and rallies to oust their ineffective and inefficient politicians, I would suggest that it's totally inconvenient as of status quo. With what's happening right now, with the obstinate opposition finding ways to impeach Arroyo from office, our economy is in a precarious state. If only the government and the opposition can find ways to resolve their political/social/economic disputes without disrupting the government-in-function, definitely our country is one step ahead towards achieving its goals. We need to remember that trust and confidence of the domestic and international investors are vital to our economy. Hence, if they feel that investing in our country will yield to nothing or less returns due to unstable political system, then we are losing our economic leverages, which we are in dire need as of the moment.<br /><br />2. Better Fabrication and Implementation of Monetary, Fiscal and Economic Policies - One of the greatest achievements of the Arroyo administration is the fabrication and establishment of effective economic policies. Although some of which were harsh policies, like increase in taxes (VAT reforms), these policies have positively affected our economy. In fact, out of the VAT reforms, Philippines regained trust and confidence from the international community by bettering our competence in managing our country's finances. Moreover, the VAT reforms made it possible for Philippines to improve its credit rating thereby allowing our country to have greater access to international loans. Aside from an effective fiscal policy, the Arroyo government played a good role in managing interest rates in the Philippines. The decline in the inflation rate from 7.6 in 2005 to 6.2 in 2006, albeit it remains an unfavourable inflation rate, proves that Philippines is gradually making progress.<br /><br />It is however futile that Philippines has sound economic policies if our government officials who take responsibility in implementing these policies are corrupt and ineffective. A study from Transparency International of the most corrupt countries in the world for year 2006 shows that Philippines is ranked 8 with Corruption Perception Index (CPI) of 2.5. According to the said Organisation, countries with less than 5 CPI mean that a serious corruption problem exists. Vietnam, a country notorious due to its prevalent corruption has been given a 2.6 CPI, a clear indication that their government has invested a lot of efforts to curb government corruption problems. Therefore, the Philippine government should work hard to allocate and monitor financial resources distributed throughout the nation. At the end of the day, all these allocated financial resource budgets, which aims to contribute to Philippines’ development will be useless if it goes to the hand of corrupt officials.<br /><br />3. Qualified Politicians to Run Positions in the Government - As I've stated earlier, Philippines has gained much from competent leaders who are qualified in managing their roles towards the realisation of an economically progressive Philippines. It's no doubt that Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has done good economic reforms. That being said, our country needs people like her. Philippines needs competent people who are capable and qualified to run the country. Indeed we live in a democratic country and our freedom of choice (regardless of our own standards), is guaranteed and protected by our constitution. International studies have shown that Filipinos are not politically mature to exercise such right. Apparently, due to lack of information/education, the country is left with a populace incompetent to distinguish which candidate is qualified to do the job.<br /><br />Historically speaking, Filipinos have this high proclivity of adhering to popular candidates rather than banking on professional qualifications. Estada, king of the Philippine cinema, was voted in power. The Philippine suffered from such a compromise. Filipinos often compromise their moral obligation to employ objectivity in choosing their candidate for office for frivolous reasons (He's popular, she’s beautiful, he's my relative etc.). After enduring the effect of our action, we never learn, we allow history to repeat itself.<br /><br />4. Government Should Invest on our Comparative Advantages - Philippines is a country earning much from remittances abroad. As much as 3 billion US dollars are sent back home by Filipino Overseas to their families, which contributes to a higher Gross Domestic Product. Among Asian countries, Philippines has one of the most highly educated and skilled labour force but our advantage is threatened by other countries' efforts to heighten their citizen's competence. Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, China and India are all posing threat to our major export (labour). From what's being said, it is imperative that the Philippine government should take necessary measures to improve the quality of education from all levels. Philippines has got lots of talented people and a better education will bring out the potentials from them.<br /><br />In as much as the Government should spend in improving the skills and competences of our labour force, the country should also extend their investment to our increasingly competitive industries namely; electronics assembly, garments, footwear, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, wood products among others. Imposing protectionism (increasing foreign good's taxes, setting quotas etc.) to gain leverages from foreign competitors in the Philippine market is a clear violation of our major trade agreements (WTO, AFTA etc). Hence, the least the government could do is to provide support (financial, logistics, technical etc.) to our entrepreneurs/investors. Any good help the Philippine government contribute the business sector of our country will definitely result to a more prosperous economy.<br /><br />In line with the government supporting Philippines' comparative advantages, government should also be mindful not to discourage foreign investors. Since Philippines need all the resources it could possibly use, the government should strike a balance of favour to both domestic and foreign industries. More industries will mean, more opportunities for Filipino people. More opportunities to people will accrue to the diminishment of poverty.<br /><br />In reality, there are innumerable things that a country should settle to achieve a level of economic success. Some of which are stated above but the greatest challenge for all countries is to make all these good ideas and concepts happen. And in order for these ideas to materialise, it requires that all sectors of the society within a country should take part. Philippines is capable of doing it, yet with so much cynicism due to enormous disparity and diversity in beliefs and principles, it will take years... even decades before it happens.
